Here's the discussion question for 'The Letters' (from 'Or Else the Lightning God'):

Mr Peter Goh’s irresponsible and insensitive dealing of Wong Oi Lan’s infatuation had caused her death. How could he have handled the matter in a better and appropriate manner?

Mr Peter Goh should have not make used of her letters to him as a lesson on english 'grammar common mistakes'. He could at least tell her to stop loving him, but it might be impossible for her to do so. He also should not humilate her love towards him and her grammar on the letters, not matter how bad it was done...

He could have just keep it among the teachers since he told them about it. He could talk to her personally and tell her to concentrate on her studies as she will be having her 'O' levels soon. If Wong Oi Lan had studied for her exams, she might have stop writing letters to him. But he might still be pestered by Wong Oi Lan.

I think Mr Peter Goh should have just reject her or explain nicely to her that it is impossible to have a relationship between them.He also can request to be friend instead of couple. He may tell her what is wrong and correct her.

If not,Mr Peter Goh may also ignored what was sent to him or just keep this as a secret.I think Mr Peter Goh is so rude that showing a personal thing like letter to others given by Oi Lan and may hurt Oi Lan's feeling.Because of Mr Peter Goh's egoist cause Oi Lan's death.

Mr Peter Goh should have told Wong Oi Lan nicely or properly that they are impossible between both of them or could have told her that they can be friends instead of being couples or give advices to her that she is still too young to be involve in relationships. This examples may have been better instead of being so cruel towards her and she may not have went to commit suicide. Mr Peter Goh is very childish by doing those things that had hurt Wong Oi Lan deeply. He should be responsible for Wong Oi Lan's death.

Peter Goh should not hurt Wong Oi Lan's feelings which has been opened for him in the first place.Writing a letter should be kept personal only Peter Goh and Wong Oi Lan should know the contents inside. But Peter Goh publicized the letter to everyone, mocking at her grammar mistakes.Because of his inhuman act, it caused Wong Oi Lan's death.

What should he have done is to get the both parties to a quiet place and give each other's opinion and explain that they cannot be together.Because the person he like was not her and their age gap is quite big, all in a nice tone. Tell her that their relationship can only be teacher and student. Also advise her that at this point of time she should not waste her youth in relationships, focus on studies. Maybe next time she will then like someone that she really love.

Mr. Peter Goh should not make fun of Wong Oi Lan during his English lesson. If he did not love her, he should tell her nicely and personally. As a teacher, he should tell her the consequence of having a relationship between them and it is impossible to have a result of them instead of showing her letters in front of the whole class. Wong Oi Lan would not commit suicide if he did not do so. He must be responsible for her death.
Doing this kind of childish behaviour show Mr. Peter Goh is a irresponsible person and he did not know the consequence of this thing.

Mr Peter Goh should have called her and told her how he felt for her. What had she done to be embarrassed in fron of the class. She only loved him and gave him love letters. That has got nothing to do with getting embarrassed in front of the class. He was too much as he did not think of her feelings when he was embrrassing her infront of the class. He was just too hrash to her.He could have atlest told her that he didn't like her.If he wanted to attract Miss Mei Yan attention he could have at lest do it his way.But using other people's love letters to impress Miss Mei Yan was just too much.

He must not have done like that to Wong Oi Lan as she would have felt hurt and would have made her to commit suicide.

In the first place,he should have not macked at her. It was very wrong of him. Even when he have hurt her,he should have atteast apologiced to her.

He should have talked to her and should have understand her feelings.

Mr Peter Goh should not done that as it would hurt her feelings.
He should not have used her love letter that she gave to him as one of his lesson as love letter is a personal thing that should not give to others to see. It is rude.He should care about Wong Oi Lan's feelings instead of hurting her.
I think that Mr Peter Goh should talk to her personally and explain that they could not be together. They only can be student and teacher.

I think Mr Peter Goh should think first before he say anything infront of anybody. He should have not embarrasse Wong Oi Lan. He should not have asked her to come up to the front and correct the grammar that she had sent him.

Mr Peter Goh could have just ignore her as if nothing had happen but he decided to tease and humiliate her. He did not think how others might have felt if they were to be tease or humiliate infront of a crowd. He should think first whn doing or saying anything.

Mr Peter Goh should not have made fun of Wong Oi Lan's love letters as it is not wrong to like someone. He should have expressed his feelings to her in a better way like pulling her out of class to talk to her or talking to her privately rather than making fun of her love letters in class. Though no one knew where the extracts came from, Oi Lan would still feel very embarrassed as she would have known by then that Mr Peter Goh knew she was the one writing him the letters. A more advisable able way to manage this matter would be for him to reject her personally in private.

Rejecting her love is fine, but he should not hurt her so much by embarrasing her infront of her classmates. She could not take it and so jump down from building. I think he should explain clearly by talking to her or writing letter to her gently. Every method would hurt her, but at least not so much, like embarrased her in front of the class. If he want to impress Mei Yan, he could use other romantic method but nt hurting Wong Oi Lan so much.

Although Mr Peter Goh does not loves Wong Oi Lan, but he should not showed her letter to the whole class and even asked her to correct her grammatical mistakes. This made her felt embarrassed and he has caused her death. I think if Mr Peter Goh does not loves her, then he should tell her personally and made things clear with each other. Explain to her that both of them are impossible to be together as he is there to teach and guide her in her academic results instead of having a relationship with her. Tell her that she should concentrate in her studies rather than to start a relationship now.

I think that he should not show the letter that she wrote to him to the whole class because she will feel very embarass about it. And, he even ask her to correct the mistakes found in the letter.

Therefore, he should ask her to meet him personally outside the staffroom after school to advise her to stop this relationship with him and he also can tutor him to improve her English Language.

I thought that Mr Peter Goh dealt with this trivial matter very un-gentlemanly. In fact, it was very a very rash decision to embarrass Wong Oi Lan on having an infatuation on him.

I am sure that having infatuations are very normal in teens. If he knew it was just an infatuation, why bother? He could have just talked to her about it, or ignore these adolescent crushes.

I feel that Mr Peter Goh should have done a better job dealing with such a trivial matter and try to be more sensitive towards his students with his sarcastic comments. He could have been a better role model for his students.

He should not have play a fool of her feeling as he did not think of the consequences. This humilation might led to a tragity, like what had really happen, Wong Oi Lan suicided. He should have reject her in a serious manner and encourage her to focuse on studies. This incident shows that he is a irresponsible teacher.

Mr Peter Goh is a very inconsiderate and uncaring person. He did not even think about how Wong Oi Lan would feel when he used her letters as am example for English Grammer Mistakes and asked her to correct the mistakes.

He should have told her that he is not interested in having relationship with her and talked with her about her future and her studies. But he did a grave mistake when he used her letters as an example for his English lesson just to attract attention from Miss Mei Yan because he would be hurting the feelings of both the ladies. And he made the matter worse by asking Wong Oi Lan to correct the mistake because that would be hurting her feelings more than anything.

So Mr Peter Goh should be the one responsible for WOng Oi Lan's death, because if he had not done anything about insulting her, she might not have committed suicide.

Mr. Peter Goh should not have used Wong Oi Lan's love letter for English lessons. It would definitely hurt her feelings, especially when she was still a young girl.

If he really does not like her, then he should explain to her slowly, and keep the secret to themselves. He has to explain that a teacher-student relationship is not really possible, as both of them have completely different jobs. If possible, tell Wong Oi Lan about his feelings towards Ms. Mei Yan.

If Mr. Peter Goh did like I said earlier, Wong Oi Lan would be safe and sound right now. Both parties would not be hurt as well.

See ya all folks!

Mr Peter Goh could have handle it one on one with Oi Lan and not embarrasse her in front of the class. Though he rejected Oi Lan in his way,he caused a life lost.He should just ask Oi Lan in the staff room one on one and explain to her that he did not liked her and advice her to concentrate on her studies.Instead of asking her to correct her own grammatical mistakes on the board,he should use an exercise for the class to her improve in her English standard.Asking Oi Lan to correct a letter which she wrote herself is an in sult to her.Mr Peter Goh should thought of the consequences before doing all these tactless things.

It was very cruel and insensitive of him to hurt Wong Oi Lan so deeply.

He could have dealt with Wong Oi Lan's infatuation in a more appropriate manner. He should have also tried to think of another way to impress Miss Mei Yan.

Although he wanted to embarrass Wong Oi Lan, he should have embarrassed her in a more decent way. It would be better if he tried to explain to her that he was not interested in her instead of embarrassing her infront of the whole class.

That behaviour of him would not have hurt Wong Oi Lan that deeply and would not have led her to commit suicide.

Mr Peter Goh should have explain to
her nicely and not embarrased Wong Oi Lan .He should tell her that they are not suitable and the age gap between them is too big and should find a good excuse to reject her without hurting her feeling like he already have a girlfriend or just ignored her.

Mr Peter Goh should advise her and tell her that at her age should be concentrate on her studies.

Mr Peter Goh should have handle this case more careful as girls are very sensative towards this kind relationship. If he have handle it properly , Wong Oi Lan would not have commited suicide .

Mr Peter Goh should handle this problem by telling Wong Oi Lan that he do not like her and it was too young for her to have relationship during her time and even having relationship with a teacher!!!

Instead of telling Oi Lan that it was very important for this year as she taking her "O" level examination and Mr Peter Goh do not like her,he even make fun of her by using her letters for the english lesson.Oi Lan was heartbroken and sad and that leads her to commit suicide. Can you imagine how it feels after being mocked by the one you loved the most...

Mr Peter Goh could able to handle this problem easily instead of making it worse. They could still make friends even if they could not be together.

To me, the way Mr Peter Goh dealt with the situation was very immature and selfish. If he had dealt the situation in a more unselfish manner and if he was more concerned about Wong Oi Lan's feelings, the situation would not have turned out so bad. If i were Mr Peter Goh, i would have confronted Oi Lan personally and privately, and explain to her that it was important to focus on her studies than waste her time having adolescent crushes. I would not say anyhing mean or anything that i think would hurt her. I will try my best to encourage her on improving her results. If all these does not work out and she does not seem to let go, i would just ignore the situation and not bother about it or bring it up again. This way,she would not feel so hurt, because instead of insulting her, encouraging her shows that he cared for her.

Mr Peter Goh should talk to her in private, and tell her that studying is more important for her,as for personal emotion, she has not reached the age yet.He should talk to her softly and educate her how to control herself in puberty. Also,Mr Peter Goh should ask her to put more effort in studying.
If Wong Oi Lan still don't want to give up,Mr Peter Goh should ignore her love and treat her as a normal student.

Peter Goh should have privately tell Wong Oi Lan that he does not love her, that there should not be any student - teacher relationship, and comfort her afterwards so that she won't be sad for so long. However, he embarrassed her in front of her classmates by showing the grammatical errors in her own love letter and told her to correct the errors instead. She's still a young girl afgterall, which is why Peter should have rejected her more gently, as cruel teasings can hurt her feeling so much that she can even commit suicide just because of the embarrassment.

Mr Peter Goh should have thought about the matter before hurting Wong Oi Lan. I think Mr Peter Goh should have talked to Wong Oi Lan properly. He should not have mocked and embarrassed Wong Oi Lan in front of the entire class. Mr Peter Goh was irresponsible and should have calmed down first.
It would be very sensitive for a girl, to be hurt by the person she had a crush on. Mr Peter Goh should have told Wong Oi Lan personnaly and made sure that they were still friends.

I think Mr Peter Goh should not insult Wong Oi Lan. He could ask her to stay back and tell her that he does not like her instead of embarrasing her. He should not hurt her feelings. If i am Mr Peter Goh, i would just tell her straight in her face that i do not like her and ask her not to waste her time on me. i would tell her that it is impossible between us because of the big age gap and i am a teacher and she is a student. I would explain that she is too young to be involved in this kind of relationship.

Mr Peter Goh should have handled this situation more adult-like, he used Wong oi lan's feelings for the attention of Miss Mei yan. i belive he could have took Wong oi lan to a corner and tell her that they were not meant for each other, instead he treated her feeling;s as a toy and caused her death. He is an adult and should act like one. He handled this situation very childishly, he could have acted more mature but he did'nt and caused Wong oi lan's death.

Or after advising to her , help her in her study and call her parent and told her parent to put more attention to her so that she don't feel mising when after he advising her about her wrong doing . And told her that in school that student is wrong to be in love with teacher an ask her to put more attention on her study and to be mature in school.

Mr Peter Goh should have be more sensible in dealing a student who have a crush on him. He should not have used Wong Oi Lan's love letter as a topic in English lesson, being that her letter had full of grammatical mistakes. Mr Peter Goh insulted Wong Oi Lan for her mistakes and showed to the whole class. He should not have humiliated Wong Oi Lan. Infatuation is commonly happened in teenagers. Mr Peter Goh should have known that students have sensitive feelings especially girls.
He should have handled personally as the letter is suppose to be confidential. So because of this, Wong Oi Lan felt insulted and went to commit suicide.
