'Unseeing' - Reason to die for
It's February!
For the previous two entries, the responses were lukewarm and not everyone has posted a comment. It's a little disheartening for me, but I do hope that things would pick up soon this month and that I'll hear more babbling down the bubbling brook.
Remember that we must agree to disagree and everyone's different. We shall not judge each other, but I do want to hear honest and well-supported opinions. Please think through your comments before typing and edit your work before publishing.
In 'Unseeing', Anna and Joseph were trapped in an unhappy marriage - Anna had sacrificed her religious pursuit and even though she tried to improve the situation by being a dutiful wife, she remained childless; Joseph had always wanted a loving wife whom he can have children with but had married an unwillingly and barren woman instead.
At the end of the story, we learned that Joseph's apology to Anna during his illness was not for something that she had thought it was for; rather, it was because he had another family. It was until the last day of his funeral that his eyes finally closed after his 'mistress' had visited him with their children. We know that he had been waiting for her to appear.
Why do you think that Joseph could finally close his eyes and rest in peace (or maybe not! we wouldn't know for sure)?
Just a few possible speculations:
- peace: he finally saw his beloved 'family'
- a relief: he knew that Anna now knows that truth and would not hold it against him because he is dead
- a revenge: he had always felt angry and unloved by Anna so he wanted to spite her by showing her that he had found someone better than her
- forgiveness: telling Anna indirectly that he has never blamed her for not loving him wholeheartedly and being barren
- a favour: to show Anna that she is released from the marriage chains and that she can continue her religous pursuits
There are many more possibilities if you think hard enough. Surprise me!

i think he was happy and relief that Anna knows that he had an affair with another woman.
I think he also wanted her to know that there is someone else that he wanted to see. He wanted to show that he loved his mistress as she is a loving wife and a mother who bear could bear him 3 children while she could not.

From my point of view,Joseph could not rest in peace as he felt guilty of betraying his wife,Anna as she could not have children, therefore having an affair with his 'mistress'.Then when his 'mistress' brought thier children to his wake, he closed his eyes, in a way telling that he is now in peace , having let Anna know that the problem lies with her and not him, and that now his conscious is clear.(Hope this is a good inference)
As for Joseph, he was unfaithful to Anna and thus he felt guilty, and would have expected Anna to know the hidden truth.
It might have been a relief for Joseph when he knew that Anna finally knows the truth that he had another family, and he would have thought that Anna would forgive him as he was already punished for betraying her.
He close his eyes in a wonderful peace of love and joy because he was happy that his mistress was brave enough to bring his childrens and herself to his funeral.
He could not closed his eyes because he felt sorry for his wife that he had a mistress and three children.He was afraid that she would not forgive him.

He might feel guilty as he is hidding having mistress.He wanted to let Anna know the truth so he is waiting for the mistress to come so that Anna will know the truth and he can rest in peace.
He close hie eye because his family has come to see him as he always wanted to have a happy family.

I think that joseph could close his eyes at last, because his mistress had brought his another family to come and see him.Because joseph had always wanted a happy family with childrens,this made joseph feel that he and anna are like not having a happy famliy.While joseph have the mistress bringing his children to see him.He felt that ,that is the family he wanted,and he had seen that his childrens are fine without any problems ,this made him able to rest in peace and close his eyes at last.

I think he did not regard Anna as a family member, because she could not bear him any children of their own. So, he went in search of another family, one that would be "true". Personally, i think Joseph could close his eyes and rest in peace because he was able to take one last look at his 'true family'. Therefore, i think he was able to close his eyes out of peace, because he was able to look at his loved ones, refering to the mistress's side of the family.
I think joseph felt that Anna was not really his family as he was always pained when ever she decided to go towards her duty to God...I think he finally closed his eyes as he had finally saw his "true" family all though he was marriade to Anna...but I think he only had a affair because Anna could not bare him a child,so I think he was asking for forgiveness and yet like telling her it's her fault and not his that she couldn't bare a child.

I think he finally closed his eyes...or at least the mistress closed them, because she was his true family who gave birth to his flesh and blood...or maybe she just use super human streght...I don't know...or maybe she's not human and can make died people listen to her like zombies...creepy...or it could have been a coincidence... maybe

He did not close his eyes when he died and he only closed it when his "mistress" came to visit him with his three childrens and i think he did it to tell them, the "mistress and his wife,Anna", that he was now in peace maybe after seeing his "family".

Joseph could not close his eyes and rest in peace as he wanted to see his 'mistress' and his three children before he could depart this world peacefully and rest in peace. His 'mistress' gave him three children as he always wanted to have one but Anna could not fulfil what he wanted all along. Joseph closed his eyes after being visited by his 'mistress' and his three children that he had been waiting.

i think that joseph did not close his eyes after anna apologise because he wished to let anna know that he was the one most guilty and not her.And also,wished to see his beloved 'mistress' and their children before closing his eyes. (xinyun) (2e2)
He should be happy and able to rest in peace because the 'mistress' came to visit his funeral with the three children. He wanted his wife, Anna, who he love the most, to know that he had been keeping a mistress outside. He knew he was guilty and knowing his wife could not forgive him but he had reasons for doing so. Anna and he could not have a child after being together for so many years so he decided to go out and get a woman who can give birth to children. He wanted his wife to forgive for betraying her, and i think that the wife will unconver the truth behind what her husband has been doing at that time and find the reason why he did that when the 'mistress' came to visit his funeral with the children.

he maybe feel unpeaceful if his mistress and his children did not come and see he ,he would wait with an open eyes until they come and see him ,and then he would close his eyes and stay in peace !!

i think the deceased did not close his eyes yet because maybe he had
sins that he wanted to be forgiven by her mistress.When she showed up in the funeral.it showed that she care for him and forgiven him for his mistakes.

i think that he knew that his wife knew that he had affair with other girl ... he also knew that his wife is not sad because she cannot bear a babby for him...

He can die with no regrets when he saw both the mistress and Anna by his side during his own funeral. So, he closed his eyes in the end of the story, where he finally saw both of them.

he might feel peaceful and relieved after 'mistress' and his children came.
He must feel remorseful to anna and 'mistress'.He could not forgive himself so he could not close his eyes earlier.
he must have close his eye peacefully as he have seen his beloved "other family".his wish to bear children also came true.more ever,the"mistress" and his children came and stay by his death bed.it must have been a most wonderful thing on earth to stay with your loved ones when you are going to the nether world.and when his eye have not closed,he had already been forgiven by anna acefully..
